Housing Crisis Revisited: That Spring Housing Crunch

At the start of last fall term, Hampshire College Housing Director, Linda Mollison, was considering all sorts of unorthodox solutions to house the unexpectedly large entering class. However, to the relief of everybody, the proposed Dakin lounge triples were never needed. Over the semester, students were slowly moved out of lounges as rooms became available, and all the lounges in Dakin were returned to their original purpose during Jan Term. Read More

Beyond the Headlines of the Danish Cartoons Controversy: An Interview With Two Hampshire Professors

On September 30, 2005, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published twelve editorial cartoons about Islam. Some depict the prophet Muhammad. Danish Muslim groups protested, finding the cartoons offensive and blasphemous. Since then, the cartoons have appeared in newspapers in more than 30 other countries. Many European Muslims have expressed offense and held protests. Some protests in the Middle East have lead to riots and the destruction of Danish embassies and missions. More than ten protesters have been killed so far in the process. Read More

Finalist for Assistant Professor of Asian Religions Position Gives Lecture

"In early Indian Buddhism, becoming an arhat was the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice, signifying the attainment of nirvana," said Ryan Bong Seok Joo, in his talk entitled, "The Arhat's Many Faces: The Rise of the Arhat Cult in Medieval China," on February 9. This was the first of four campus presentations by the finalists for the position of assistant professor of Asian religions, sponsored by members of the Asian religion search committee in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Cultural Studies. It's 2am in early May. You've got a ten-page paper due in seven hours. You switch your laptop power plug with your friend's until you get to about 50%. Your eyes require another sip of old, stale coffee just to keep open. You reposition yourself, cursing the awkward height of the table, which changes every time you place or remove your hands from it, not to mention the uncomfortable seat.
