Hampshire Inaugurates Ralph J. Hexter
It was only a few months ago, outside the Robert Crown Center of Hampshire College, that neon green signs read, “Meet Ralph,” advertising Ralph Hexter’s candidacy for the presidency of Hampshire College. Little did Ralph and the Hampshire community know that on October 15, 2005 Ralph Hexter would be inaugurated as Hampshire College’s fifth president. Read More
'Children of Tsunami' Productions: Understanding a Reality
The frequent occurrence of disasters of late—Hurricane Katrina, the South Asian Earthquake, and the Asian Tsunami—have all left us with a new reality to face and think about. As we are flooded with images of devastation, and as they slowly become normative, we forget that there is an important process of recovery afterwards. It is this process that must be documented just as intensely as the initial impact of the disaster. Read More

Lip Service Activism
“First the tsunami, and now this; South Asia has been going through a lot in recent times...” noted Professor Vivek Bhandari, Hampshire’s (currently non-) resident South Asia studies specialist. It doesn’t, however, take a specialist to figure that out and this is of course a reference to the October 8th earthquake centered in the Pakistan-administered region of the disputed territory of Kashmir. (Queer) Notes, Necessarily Fragmentary
In my senior year of college, I sent a letter to my school paper. It began, “This is not an act of courage. This is an act of survival.” At the time, it captured my sense of institutional and racial isolation, especially at a conservative, very heteronormative Catholic university, in which only white students dared to come out, and at that, infrequently. Those will be making a blazing comeback! However, the number of tickets available to students for guests has come down to seven from last year’s ten. Read More

Reel Cool Movies that You May Have Scene
Elizabethtown was supposed to have been released on July 29th. This was very exciting news for my Orlando Bloom-loving sister, because that is also her birthday. Obviously, Orlando and her are meant to be together. When we found out that the movie wasn’t going to be released until the fall, it was a tragedy. Slowly, pictures were released from the film, eventually leading to a trailer. My sister and I waited anxiously around our computer as we watched the trailer load. Finally, it was time. Read More

Listen Up for the Gin & Tonics
So you thought gin and tonic was just an alcoholic beverage? Normally, you’d be right, but this year the mixture is being redefined musically by The Gin & Tonics, Hampshire’s brand new (and Fi-com funded) a cappella group.
“In the past, groups have formed to spite the Crazy Pitches for rejecting them,” says the group’s founder, Sarah Weiss (F04). “But we just want to sing.” Read More
